In marriage counseling each partner will be asked to make a commitment to the marriage while improving the relationship. Couples will be asked to complete outside work and assignments with each other and on their own. Couples therapy works most effectively when each partner commits to working in treatment for a minimum duration of time, as opposed to only during a crisis.

However, improvement in relationships is possible in moments of crisis, or even when only one partner chooses to engage in treatment.
